To start with you will need a packet of Martin’s Hot Whiskey Spice Blend, together with some Demerara Sugar (or you can opt for honey, amber sugar crystals or a sugar stick, if your entertaining) plus a fresh lemon. Oh, and not least, your favorite brand of whiskey on stand-by !
Choice of Whiskey. When it comes to Whiskey, it’s very much a personal matter. You could be partial to an Irish Triple Distilled variety, or a Scotch Single Malt or a Blended type; even American Rye Whiskeys, such as Jack Danial’s and Jim Bean can also provide the worthiest of foundation to making the ideal Hot Whiskey /Hot Toddy. But with a bit of experimentation you’ll soon discoverwhat lends itself well.
In Ireland it was discovered that Pot Stilling whiskey offers a rich deeper flavour and oilier consistency. For example brands such as Redbreast are 100% Pot Still, where as Powers, is a 80/20 blend of Pot Still and Grain Mash. Jameson, the largest selling Irish brand outside of Ireland, is actually a 50/50 blend. Pot still varieties (once the world’s most favoured) were derived from both a blend of the un-malted and malted mash. Scotch on the other hand, is a grain mash of only malted barley. The term ‘single malt’, often referred to in ‘Scotch’ labeling is signifying the product is derived from or originated from one distillery. Since we are based in Ireland, we are going to be a little bias and feature the some of the best ‘Triple Distilled’ brands to be found in Ireland. Anyway we digress from the task in hand – we’ve a Hot Whiskey / Hot Toddy to make !
Here we go – ‘Martin’s Hot Whiskey / Hot Toddy’
Boil the kettle: We are going to douse the ‘Hot Whiskey/ Hot Toddy’ glass with a sprinkle of hot water, to warm the glass inside, so as not to cool the contents later. To avoid cracking choose a substantial glass that you would normally use to create an Irish Coffee, or if you prefer, you can of course use your favorite ceramic mug. Pour in a little of the boiling water and after a minute discard the water in the glass.
Now for the Whiskey: Pour in a generous measure, here we pour just short of third of a glass, approximately 46ml. The more whiskey you put in the more it’s going to cool the drink. So take care. Now there are rumors that microwaving the glass, water and whiskey together (as some Pubs might to save time and effort) will actually reduces the alcohol content. Research shows it can, but not as much as we may think, it’s a drop of somewhere around 8-10%. Which in taste and kick, can make all the difference to your enjoyment. If you want to ensure the end result is as ‘God’ intended, then work away as we have here.
Getting it together: Now you have your whiskey in the glass, place approximately 4 grams of our Hot Whiskey Spice into our infuser-spoon, making sure you have a few of each of the key ingredients from our packet ( 4 clovers, 4 All Spice Berries, and the rest Cinnamon) Of course you can have them running around as ‘free floating’, but for ease of drinking and infusing, we believe our special infuser spoon is a great addition for this purpose. You can obtain these from our on-line store both separately or together with a box of Spices. Now place the spoon in the glass, boil the kettle once again, and pour the hot water over the infuser spoon, as you fill the remainder of your glass.
Finishing touches: If you take sugar, now’s the time to drop some in as we prepare to give the contents a good infusing stir. Again our preference is to make the ‘Hot Whiskey / Hot Toddy’ as rich, deep and as satisfying as possible, so Demerara sugar (or Brown Sugar) offers an opportunity to keep the rustic flavours abounding. Yes some use honey as an alternative, but if you are looking for a sweet sharpness Demerara is perhaps the best to deliver this. Likewise, if you wish, leave the infuser spoon in the glass for as long as desired. The occasional stir will simply deepen the flavours and taste sensation (we do this in our home). For the finalé, you need a slice a lemon. Squeeze the juices of a good sliced segment into the glass, and drop into the glass, or alternatively rest the slice on the edge as a garnish, or indeed do both!
If you wish to add a further little twist, to bring on a ‘Whiskey Mac’ Style, you can also add a couple of small grains of dried Ginger to the infuser spoon beforehand. We include a sachet in our 32g Hot Whiskey Spices Carton.
